General Manager KBCS
Steve began his radio career in 1984 at KVMR-FM in Nevada City CA. During his time at KVMR he managed a capital campaign manager to help establish a new non-profit organization to govern KVMR. Steve also served as Operations Director, then Program Director and finally General Manager from 1990-1993.
In 1994, he moved to Arcata CA to serve as Assistant Manager at KHSU-FM, a NPR affiliate. Steve also has worked as weekend news host and reporter for Capital Public Radio in Sacramento, and Nevada County Broadcasting in Grass Valley CA.
Steve became the first full time General Manager of KBCS-FM, serving the Seattle metro market in 2000.
KBCS qualified for a full Community Service Grant from CPB in 2004. This funding allowed the station to greatly expand its service to the community with increased reach, upgraded programming and improved fundraising. As part of an effort to expand the audience, Ramsey led a capital effort that began in 2011 to move the main transmission facility on a nearby mountain. The project was completed in 2013, and increased the station’s coverage area by over 600,000.
Unfortunately, the increased population measures disqualified KBCS from the CSG program in 2015. Repeated appeals to CPB were unsuccessful. The station re-applied to the program, May 2017.
Steve Ramsey graduated from the California State University, Sacramento in 1988 with a degree in Communications/Media emphasis.
