Job Description:

In the bustling heart of Austin, Texas, where vibrant culture meets an ever-evolving community, there exists a radio station that stands as a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and the unwavering commitment to serving the people. That station is KAZI 88.7, the oldest community station inAustin, and its journey through time is nothing short of remarkable.

From the very beginning, KAZI was not just another radio station; it was a dream brought to life by the late Dr. John Warfield, a visionary professor of African-American Studies at the University of Texas. Driven by a passion for media access and educational programming, KAZI was born on August 29, 1982, with generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the generosity of LBJ-S Broadcasting, which provided vital tower space.
lnan age when community voices were often overshadowed, KAZI emerged as·a beacon of hope. Its mission was clear: to provide a platform for voices that had long been marginalized and underserved by mainstream radio. This mission was not just a statement on paper; it was a commitment etched in the hearts of the dedicated volunteers who breathed life into KAZI. These volunteers, who came together out of a profound sense of love for their community, have been the lifeblood of this station from day one.

KAZl’s roots run deep, nourished by the spirit of Austin and the determination of its people. As a listener supported, non-commercial community radio station, KAZI has relied on the generosity of its dedicated listeners and the support of commercial sponsors to thrive. The station’s commitment to keeping the community informed and engaged is further exemplified by ls broadcasting of the weekly City Council meeting, made possible through funds from the City of Austin.

What sets KAZI apart, however, is not just its history or its commitment to community engagement. It’s the unique blend of music and programming that fills the airwaves. From RnB to Soul, Hip-Hop to Jazz, Gospel to Blues, Reggae to Zydeco, and so much more, KAZI has been a sonic tapestry reflecting the diverse tastes and voices of Austin and its surrounding communities.

Local artists have found a home at KAZI, where their talents are celebrated and shared with a dedicated audience. This station has not only played the hits but has also championed the underdogs, shining a spotlight on independent artists and their creations.

For over four decades, KAZI has stood as a steadfast force, bridging communities and creating a family atmosphere for its volunteers and listeners alike. The passion and dedication of its volunteer staff have kept listeners coming back, always eager for more.

In this fast-paced world of ever-changing media, KAZI remains a beacon of continuity and connection. It is a testament to the power of community-driven media, where the heart and soul of Austin find their voice. As we embark on this journey through KAZl’s history, we invite you to discover the stories, the voices, and the music that have shaped this remarkable institution.

Welcome to the history of KAZI 88. 7 FM, where commitment to community is not just a mission but a way of life.
