Cannabis (Marijuana) Underwriting
Q. Can our station accept underwriting from cannabis-related businesses, including medical marijuana dispensaries and/or recreational retail outlets?
A. Though the sale of cannabis products may be legal in your state, best practices dictate NFCB advises you that your station should NOT accept cannabis-related underwriting. Why? Broadcasters need to be cautious because:
- The Federal government classifies marijuana as a controlled substance, therefore even if the state where your station is located has legalized the possession and sale of cannabis products, the Federal government has not.
- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) oversees broadcast licenses. The FCC has not provided any advice about whether or not it would be permissible to broadcast such underwriting, but does your station want to become the test case?
- Stations that are recipients of Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) grants could be at risk of losing that funding, as it is federal money.
