Maryfran Tyler is the Senior Director, Strategy, for NPR. In her role, she focuses on meeting the needs of stations and producers of the Public Radio Satellite System (PRSS) by helping to identify and implement emerging technologies and services. Recently, she’s led NPR’s efforts to help broadcasters prepare for emergencies and business recovery, while providing critical information to their communities before, during, and after natural and man-made disasters.

Stations implementing PRSS’ MetaPub service are able to deliver text information to smart automobile dashboards, mobile phones and tablets. Stations can provide emergency alerts about impending tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes, emergency shelter locations of emergency shelters, traffic issues and chemical spills to help keep people safe. MetaPub also enables stations to provide real-time program and event information and increase station revenues by using it for fundraising and sponsorships.

She worked to secure funding to provide emergency loaner equipment, such as transmitters and studios kits, to stations, a service that launched this month. She also designed a professional development program, which began earlier this year, to provide training and public radio certification for engineers and other technical staff at stations.

She began her career in radio before reporting for The Worcester (MA) Telegram & Evening Gazette, covering Capitol Hill for Thomson Newspapers, working as an editor at USA TODAY before becoming a founder of usatoday.com. She’s a graduate of Vassar College and has a MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
