Elva De La Torre is the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants and the first Latina Executive Director of 91.3 KXCI, Tucson’s 41 year-old Community Radio Station. KXCI exists on the ancestral homelands of the Tohono O’odham and Yoeme. Elva studied Media Communications in Southern California and worked in community education and training for over 20 years. She spent 10 of those years with the Peace Corps working in Latin America and Asia. Elva worked as a Peace Corps volunteer and later Training Director with all of the complexities of being Queer and BIPOC while operating in spaces where colonialism and resistance co-exist. She began volunteering with KXCI in 2011 while working in Tucson’s nonprofit sector. Elva is a first generation Chicana and is committed to uplifting the diversity of voices of the Sonoran Borderlands.
