Type: Independent contractor, self-directed work schedule. This is a part-time, contracted position for the remainder of 2024. Possibility to renew contract in 2025 commensurate with performance and proven ability.

Compensation: $25/hour. Maximum compensation of $24,000 through December 31, 2024.

Other: This is a self-directed position. Remote work is permitted, but will require occasional travel for meetings both at KZMU and throughout the listening region. The position requires the applicant provide their own computer.  Reports to KZMU Station Manager.

Job Summary
The primary role of the Development Coordinator is to secure new funding sources and maintain existing resources for current and future KZMU operations through underwriting, pledge drives, major gifts and grant writing. The Development Coordinator supports KZMU’s strategic vision by leading programs and activities necessary to meet revenue objectives for the financial health of the station. The Development Coordinator assists in preparing and adheres to an annual budget and aims to meet long-term goals of the strategic vision. Adhering to a station budget and meeting fundraising goals are crucial components of this position. The Development Coordinator works closely with staff to achieve station goals, objectives, mission and vision.

About the Station
KZMU is a grassroots, community radio station located in the dramatic red rock country of southern Utah. Our home is the small town of Moab, Utah, more than 100 miles from the nearest city. Since 1992, KZMU has truly been an aural oasis in the desert airwaves of southeastern Utah. Local volunteer DJs program our airwaves, along with a small staff. Our public affairs programming includes interviews with community movers and shakers: artists, activists, government officials, scientists and business leaders. We air KZMU News, Democracy Now, Science Moab, and a selection of regional productions. KZMU is also about music—all kinds of music—connecting community members to one another and to the wider world. You can be sure that whatever you hear will be spontaneous, fun and energetic. Indeed, our mission statement is to inform, educate, engage, entertain and connect the communities of Southeastern Utah.

Job Duties

  • Research, implement, manage and evaluate donor management, development and fundraising initiatives, including underwriting efforts, on-air pledge drives, major donor support, and future capital campaigns.
  • Develop, solicit, secure, manage and evaluate business relationships for the radio station to exceed fundraising and underwriting goals.
  • Establish relationships with new underwriting clients and produce underwriting spots as required by individual contracts.
  • Monitor organizational agreements, trades, in-kind donations, and MOUs.
  • Write and draft funding proposals, underwriting and PSA copy
  • Assist Station Manager and Board of Trustees in major donor recruitment and relations.

Qualifications

  • Experience in grant writing and financial management in a non-profit organization (preferably public radio or other community-based media).
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people and businesses.
  • Ability to identify and pursue funding opportunities.
  • Experience with and ability to understand and adhere to a budget. Familiarity with non-profit fundraising principles and database management.
  • Strong writing skills necessary to represent KZMU successfully to the community, grantors, and major donors.
  • Experience in fundraising activities such as grant writing, donor, and public funding program management.
  • High competency with standard desktop software applications.

Other Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of FCC regulations applicable to radio broadcasting and Center for Public Broadcasting grant requirements.
  • Experience with or knowledge of donor management softwares and CRMs.
  • Familiarity with utilization of new media technology for program development and/or organizational communication and development;

 

Physical Demands 

  • Mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment and attend off-site meetings.
  • Occasional heavy lifting of sound equipment, etc.
