Operations Coordinator, WDRT
David Klann has community radio in his blood – his father was an announcer at one of the first non-commercial educational stations in the US. After receiving a Bachelors degree in radio broadcasting and working in major market commercial radio (pre-digital era), Klann veered west and spent the bulk of his career in the world of information technology. He returned to his radio roots when he volunteered at WORT in Madison, WI in the early Oughts. Seeking a life change, Klann veered west again and moved to the Driftless region of Wisconsin in 2005 where he hooked up with the folks starting Driftless Community Radio. He and a few others cobbled together some old computer hardware and built the Internet station, radiodriftless.org. Encouraged and informed by some Community Radio veterans, they filed an application for a full-power NCE station in 2007 and WDRT, Viroqua went on the air September 17, 2010. Klann designed and assembled the nuts, bolts and wires of the station. He continues as the WDRT’s operations coordinator and has turned his experience and passion for radio into a business that helps stations reach the airwaves, Broadcast Tool & Die.
