Job Description:
Mendocino County Public Broadcasting is seeking a Bilingual Reporter to serve our listeners with high-quality daily news reporting on a full range of issues relevant to our rural community in Northern California, and to expand our news coverage to engage Spanish-speaking communities.
Job Title: Bilingual Reporter
Job Requirements: KZYX’s Bilingual Reporter will create 3-5 stories per week, and will collaborate with the News Director and stringers to help develop a daily newscast. The Bilingual Reporter will work with other staff and programmers to recruit and train community stringers to contribute to the broadcast, and to integrate news with Public Affairs and Emergency reporting when possible/desirable.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Produce daily news to fit into KZYX news blocks, and work with News Director to create a 10-12 minute daily newscast.
- Recruit and train community news stringers, with special efforts to include underserved populations.
- Coordinate with News Director, Public Affairs Director and other staff during emergencies and disasters to provide consistent, accurate and timely bilingual emergency information to our listeners, and to develop long-term relationships with local disaster responders.
- Serve as liaison for KZYX to local Latino organizations
- Attend major donor events, public events and regularly participate in on-air fundraising
Necessary Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in broadcast journalism
- Experience in radio production, preferably in a public media environment
- Knowledge of Mendocino County politics, government, geography, history, institutions and people
- Demonstrated skills in editing, interviewing, audio editing software, and writing for broadcast
- Good people skills, with experience as a trainer
- Supervisory and leadership experience
- Strong sense of the value of public service media
- Willingness to work flexible hours as news stories require
- Training as a reporter, writer, editor, photographer, or producer
- Familiarity with best practices for digital content and social media
- Demonstrated commitment to accuracy, ethics, and transparency
30-40 hours a week, Dental Insurance, Medical Stipend included.
