Name: Antonio Ortiz
Station/Affiliation: KPFA Radio
Position: Interim General Manager
Relevant Experience:
I have worked in community media and radio for 25 years, first in Public Access TV and currently in radio. I am an advocate for policy changes that actively support Racial Justice, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging because I believe everyone can contribute to a successful organization and that we are more powerful as a group than as an individual.
I am currently the Interim General Manager for KPFA Radio and I managed the station through financial hardship, I reduced and hired staff when necessary, I addressed grievances, I negotiated a Union Contract, and I trained and supported the new leaders of the organization.
One accomplishment that I am particularly proud of is developing and updating the KPFA “Every Person” handbook, which readapts current employee and volunteer manuals to clearly state station goals, roles and responsibilities, systems and tools at the station, compliance with FCC, State and Federal rules and regulations, and anything else that a volunteer and employee would need to know to be successful at the station. Producers have noted that my innovative ideas raise the level of excellence and I actively support their success, both within and beyond their roles, by providing access to training programs and hands-on work experience to advance their skills and professionalism.
I value and support consensus decision making and I acknowledge that it takes time to build trust and ensure everyone participates and is heard. I believe my skills and strengths will be of value to the NFCB Board of Directors and the Organization.
