Sofiya Abena Ballin is a Caribbean-American writer, journalist, and producer, celebrated for her award-winning work. As a former features reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, she spent three years delving into arts, culture, race, and identity, covering city protests and interviewing a diverse range of figures from celebrities to politicians.
Ballin is also the creator of the award-winning Black History Untold project. An identity series that explores the importance of a comprehensive Black history through powerful and personal interviews. Black History Untold has grown into a film project that won two Webbys from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
She has also written for Huffington Post, Washington Post, R29 Unbothered, Essence, and FADER. She has produced for the New York Times, the ACLU, the Brooklyn Nets, and the global retailer Aerie. She is now the executive producer of StoryCorps’ Brightness In Black. A new initiative backed by Jordan Brand that collects and archives Black stories of love, joy, triumph and strength.Throughout her journey, Ballin has become a testament to the power of Black media makers telling their own stories.
